Today we will talk about a really important sensor for the correct functioning of the engine, which is the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature). This sensor tells the computer the temperature of the engine coolant water.
Now, for what purpose is the temperature of the motor measured? Good for the following:
-Ignition of the electric fan when the temperature exceeds 110 degrees C.
-Regulate the air-fuel mixture depending on the temperature of the engine.
-Control disconnection of the air conditioning compressor if the engine is overheating.
-Driver warning by motor temperature instruments.
Where is the ECT?
In general, the temperature sensor is mounted on the back of the engine block or in the chamber so that it receives the coolant outlet temperature. In the Chery Orinoco (A3) is behind the engine, next to the coil.
.
What is ECT?
The temperature sensor is nothing more than a thermistor which is a semiconductor that varies its resistance as a function of temperature. The higher the temperature, the lower its resistance (around hundreds of ohms) and the lower the temperature, the higher its resistance (thousands of ohms).
The computer measures the resistance of the sensor by circulating current to the thermistor in a voltage division arrangement, so the output voltage of the sensor varies depending on the resistance of the sensor and it is this latter variable that the computer measures.
How to do the tests?
As a first intention and very important to work with the terminal disconnected or keep hands, hair or other objects away from the electro-fan. It can turn on if you manipulate this sensor.
You must also know some electricity, otherwise what I will mention below will be difficult to understand.
To test the Branch
1.-Remove the negative terminal of the battery.
2.-Remove the sensor connector.
3.-Connect a resistance of about 680 ohms to the sensor connector.
4.-Place the negative terminal of the battery and start the engine.
Once the engine starts, the thermometer needle should raise a little over 50 degrees centigrade and you should not turn on the thermometer lamp.
If everything turns out as described above, the branch is in good electrical condition.
To test the Sensor
1.-With the engine cold (DO NOT REMOVE THE SENSOR WITH THE HOT ENGINE, THERE IS A RISK OF BURNS FROM HOT WATER), disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2.-Disconnect the sensor connector.
3.-Remove the sensor with the use of a wrench.
Publicidad.
With the help of a multimeter in kilo ohm scale measure the resistance of the sensor under the following conditions:
If everything turns out as described above, the sensor is in good condition.
What things should you expect at the time of a temperature sensor failure?
Another very important thing is not to confuse the ignition of the temperature lamp due to lack of refrigerant in the tank. This signal is always fixed, it does not flash like sensor failure. That is, if once the switch is turned ON and turn on the fixed lamp check the coolant level and see if it is too thick (in bad condition) as it clogs the sensor float.
Here is a video of how to do it
